Jaroslaw Dobrowolski
Beautiful pen and ink sketches of Cairene architecture that capture the drama and humanity of the medieval city.
Endlessly fascinating to generations of artists, Cairo continually reveals new perspectives to the viewer. The Living Stones of Cairo presents a series of pen and ink sketches of historic (mostly medieval) Cairene architecture, made by a single author over a period of fifteen years. They are an attempt to capture the powerful appeal of the medieval city still present within the modern metropolis. Freezing time in the momentary impressions of the modern observer, the sketches also depict the aspects of the city that have seemingly escaped the passage of time.
The accompanying text presents the monuments as part of a larger cultural, social, and historical continuum, putting the buildings in human perspective. In Cairo, the reflection of human drama in architecture is particularly apparent; the text highlights this drama through character sketches of the rivalries, family relations, intrigues, and alliances between the patrons and builders of the medieval city.
Cross-references to other sketches in the book draw the captions together into a narrative that reflects the intricate relationships between the buildings, their founders, and their neighborhoods. This book will enhance the enjoyment of the involved traveler who strives to make the encounter with another culture more meaningful and shift their perspective from the ‘exotic’ to the familiar.
Jaroslaw Dobrowolski has worked in Egypt since the 1980s and is currently the technical director for the Egyptian Antiquities Project of the American Research Center in Egypt. He has worked on several architectural conservation projects in Egypt, including the sabil-kuttab of Nafisa al-Bayda in the neighborhood of Bab Zuwayla in Islamic Cairo.
