Rare images of the Middle East

After Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt in 1798, and Palestine in the following year, the West rediscovered Egypt and the Holy Land. Painters and artists, travelers and archaeologists flocked to the region during the nineteenth century and produced some of the most interesting and valuable records of the cities and villages, topography, buildings, and customs—much of which has since disappeared or changed beyond recognition. The items featured in this work record this vanished world in fine detail. Palestine and Egypt under the Ottomans is based on Hisham Khatib’s unique collection of art and printed works covering the 400-year period of Ottoman rule in the region. The core of the material here are the paintings—mainly nineteenth-century watercolours, many of them by renowned artists such as Frederick Goodall, Edward Lear, Carl Warner, and Carl Haag—which concentrate on a realistic portrayal of the Holy Land (in particular Jerusalem) and Egypt, rather than basking in romantic ‘Orientalism.’ Images from the valuable plate books are of exceptional interest. These include rare works by Charles van de Velde, Sir David Wilkie, Louis de Forbin, François Pâris, Achille Prisse d’Avennes, and David Roberts. The section on travel books—also frequently illustrated—includes works by Bernardino Amico, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, Michel Nau, Adrian Reland, and Walter Tyndale. Some of the oldest material discussed and illustrated here are the maps and views, while from the latter end of the Ottoman period, this volume also records some of the earliest surveys and atlases of the region, as well as original photographs. These extraordinarily diverse perspectives on the history and society of the Holy Land and Egypt, as recorded in the writings, paintings, maps, and photography of western travelers and observers, make this an invaluable source of reference, not only for specialists and students of Middle Eastern history but also for collectors and the general reader.

DR. HISHAM KHATIB was born in Acre, Palestine and spent his youth and early career in Jerusalem, where he was the city’s chief electrical engineer. He has lived in Amman, Jordan, since the early 1970s and for many years served in the Jordanian government as a minister. One of the world’s leading energy experts and honorary vice chairman of the World Energy Council, Dr. Khatib has published widely on energy matters and the global environment. Alongside his professional activities, Dr. Khatib has collected paintings, lithographs, travel books, maps, atlases, and photographs on Jerusalem, Palestine, and Egypt. His rich and varied collection is one of the largest still in private hands.
